Giving & Receiving Feedback July 23, 2019 Why is feedback so tough? Let’s look at our “normal” perceptions of feedback Daniel Lobb, CPLP | TRP Enterprises, Inc. © 2019 TRP Enterprises, Inc.

Why do we dislike feedback? Let’s start with “Reviews” GREAT GOOD OK NEEDS WORK STRAIGHT UP AWFUL First of all, it’s the performance review. You have ever conducted a review where we could have used another column like this? Or maybe you got that kind of review done to you?

You are “adequate” Performance reviews lived in the doomed domain of adequacy. “Adequate” is a word best used to describe “I really don’t care enough to be any more descriptive.”

Maybe the other person is loud… Then there is the feedback we get where the person giving it is loud, obnoxious, and totally in our face. I can hear you, all right? Knock it off!

Maybe we don’t have a good relationship… There are also those conversations where we despise the other person…

Maybe you’ve been burned by feedback? Or maybe we’ve been burned by feedback… And then there are certain people who we have to give feedback to and you know, it’s like we’ve given them the tools to succeed but no matter what, these people just do it the wrong way.

Sometimes people insist on doing it their way!

Feedback Feedback is information that we use to make corrections. Alamance County/Burlington Airport, final approach.

GOOD FEEDBACK BAD FEEDBACK

How can we receive feedback? Feedback is criticism Feedback is a gift Victim Mentality TRP

Feedback Feedback is information that we use to make corrections. Alamance County/Burlington Airport, final approach.

Feedback is energy Grounded Power, usefulness Resistance Avoidance = repeated error

Benefits of Feedback Teaches how we affect the world around us. Tells us how others see us. Facilitates cooperation. Facilitates the free flow of information. Heals divisions between people.

Feedback Examples A performance review— either good or bad. Our emotional reaction to that performance review. The feeling of sluggishness and tiredness after eating too much… Our reaction when the message of feedback seems incorrect.

Giving Feedback The best gift comes from our values. We give feedback based on the fact that: We care We’re responsible We respect their potential

Giving Feedback We often don’t give feedback due to: Our need to be liked Our fear of offending others Our own emotions

Receiving Feedback Two Benefits: The substance of the message may be useful. We identify our triggers: why I am reacting to this?

Common Reactions Defensiveness/justification Denial Attacking the messenger Explaining or rationalizing Criticizing the manner of delivery
