INTRODUCTION What is H.O.T? Who can use it? How can we use it? When should we use it? Why should we use it? Your Turn- Say it!

HIGHER ORDER THINKING It is not students ability to recall information. Ability to use knowledge in new situations. Use knowledge or transform it into something new, make decisions or solve problems they are more motivated to learn.

WHO CAN USE H.O.T The world is changing quickly and students will need to develop higher order thinking skills to live successful lives.

When should we use H.O.T? ONE WORD! ALWAYS!

WHY SHOULD WE USE IT? It’s a signal to students about what you think is important Defines what will be learnt Improved student learning and motivation

DYK: An average teacher asks 400 questions each day, roughly 70,000 questions each year, or 2 to 3 million questions over a teaching career. That means teachers spend a third of their time asking questions. Yet most of the questions teachers pose are answered in less than a second

YOUR TURN Example 1: A middle school language arts class is reading Katherine Paterson’s novel Bridge to Terabithia. As part of a class discussion, the teacher asks students, “Can you describe a time when you felt like Jesse did at the beginning of the book, and explain why? Tell us how your feelings were like Jesse’s and how they were different.” Example 2: An elementary school geography class is studying the country of Canada. The teacher groups students in pairs. Each pair is tasked with selecting a Canadian province and making a poster about it. The poster must include information about these aspects of the province: location and map position, population, government, climate, natural resources, and imports and exports.

A middle school math class is studying how to graph linear functions A middle school math class is studying how to graph linear functions. After students complete problems at their seats, the teacher asks a few students to show the class how they solved the problem. One student is asked to come to the board and graph y = 2x + 4 to show everyone how he solved this problem.

For high quality discussions to take place, teachers should pose open-ended questions in relations to the lesson objectives ‘Before we start, take a look at this page, what interesting words can you see?

What color is your block? Tell me about what you are building.
