Collective Impact Let’s Build It 2/19/2014 Collective Impact “Large scale social change requires broad cross-sector coordination.” Let’s Build It Susan Graham, MSW, MA Leadership Development Consultant Speaker, Trainer, Coach John Kania & Mark Kramer – Collective Impact, Winter, 2011 - Stanford Social Innovation Review

Collective impact takes us from common goals to uncommon results. Slide from: http://www.collectiveimpactforum.org/what-collective-impact

Pre-Conditions for Collective Impact Social Change Influential Champion - or group of champions who can gather & engage cross-sector leaders A Sense of Urgency for Change - opportunity or crisis that must be acted upon now Adequate Financial Resources -  2-3 years of funding and an anchor funder or funders

Too many organizations are working in isolation from one another. Slide from: http://www.collectiveimpactforum.org/what-collective-impact

Why This Path? Collective Impact is an effective framework (not model) that has been shown to work Diverse stakeholders work in concert to fix large scale social problems and systems  No one “program or organization, however well managed and/or funded,” can do it alone “we believe that there is no other way society will achieve large-scale progress against the urgent and complex problems of our time, unless a collective impact approach becomes the accepted way of doing business” Fay Hanleybrown, John Kania, & Mark Kramer - Channeling Change: Making Collective Impact Work – Stanford Social Innovation Review – January, 2012

Collective impact brings people together, in a structured way, to achieve social change. Slide from: http://www.collectiveimpactforum.org/what-collective-impact

Building a statewide effort is a strategic process. Webster’s Dictionary defines strategic planning as “the science and art of mobilizing all forces (resources) – to obtain the goals and objectives” Its not RESOURCES but RESOURSEFULNESS that ultimately makes the difference Tony Robbins

It starts with a common agenda. This means coming together to collectively define the problem and create a shared vision to solve it. Slide from: http://www.collectiveimpactforum.org/what-collective-impact

Assure optimal development of EVERY child in the State of Connecticut Developmental screening is a way parents and others can identify children who might be a risk of developmental delays or behavioral problems. These issues can affect a child’s ability to do well in school These issues can affect a child’s ability to do well in community. These issues can affect a child’s ability to do well in life

It establishes shared measurement. That means agreeing to track progress in the same way, which allows for continuous improvement. Slide from: http://www.collectiveimpactforum.org/what-collective-impact

It fosters mutually reinforcing activities. That means coordinating each partners’ unique competencies to maximize the end result. Slide from: http://www.collectiveimpactforum.org/what-collective-impact

It encourages continuous communication. This means building relationships and trust among all participants and includes those who are affected most (parents & caregivers) Slide from: http://www.collectiveimpactforum.org/what-collective-impact

And it has a strong backbone. This means having a team dedicated to orchestrating the work of the group. Slide from: http://www.collectiveimpactforum.org/what-collective-impact

All of these conditions together can produce EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS

SYSTEM BUILDING REQUIRES: ALL STAKEHOLDERS: National, State, Regional and Local levels Families, Caregivers, Young Adults Providers – line staff, supervisors, administrators Judge, Policymakers, Evaluators, Community partners Collaboration Consensus building Partnership “deceptively simple” Liz Weaver
