Aim: How was the Independent Republic of Texas created?

Where is Texas? 2

The Republic of Texas In the Early 1800’s, few people lived in Texas Tejanos: Mexicans who claimed Texas as their home.

Growth of Texas Empresarios: offered to bring families to Texas to settle the land in exchange for huge tracts of land from the Spanish Moses Austin: received the first land grant in Texas in 1821. Austin died before he made it to Texas. His son Stephen recruited 300 settlers to move to Texas. Each received 960 acres of land

A land grant is a gift of land or its privileges made by a government or other authority as a reward to develop unused land in relatively unpopulated areas.

3. Settlers had to follow three laws to live in Texas Learn and speak Spanish Convert to Catholicism Obey Mexican law

Americans in Texas 1830- there are more Americans than Mexicans in Texas Americans had refused to adopt Mexican ways Mexico put a ban (stop) on all American immigration and taxed American goods Stephen Austin asked for the ban to be lifted and for Texas to become a separate state. President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna refused and declared himself dictator of Mexico

Lack of loyalty to Mexico by settlers led to conflict. Americans in Texas joined forces with the Tejanos /African Americans and began fighting for Texan Independence. Stephen Austin, the son of Moses, vowed to see Texas free from Mexican control.

Fight for Independence Battle of Gonzales was the first Texan victory, followed by the victory of San Antonio The Alamo: lasted 12 days. Texans held up in an old nearby mission. Mexicans broke through the walls with cannons and killed mostly everyone inside, among the dead was Davy Crockett Texans establish the Republic of Texas President- David G.
