National Senior Certificate Requirements: 3 ways to pass NSC and obtain tertiary course entry: NSC There are 3 ways that one can pass their NSC exams…. with entrance to HC Diploma or Bachelor Degree Studies. In order to pursue studies at university level …need to meet requirements for BD studies. HC: Higher Certificate D: Diploma BD: Degree 7
NSC Minimum Requirement for Pass Have you passed an official language on the Home Language level, i.e. 40% or more? Have you passed any 2 other subjects with 40% or more Have you passed an additional 3 subjects with 30% or more? If the answer to all three questions is “Yes”, then you have passed the NSC. The two compulsory language subjects and Math's / Math's Lit are designated subjects but please be aware that even though LO is compulsory it does not count as a designated subject. entry to Higher Certificate (HC) study Have you passed an official language on the Home Language level, i.e. 40% or more? Have you met the language requirement of the First Additional Language, i.e. 30% or more? Have you passed any 2 other subjects with 40% or more? If the answer to all three questions is “Yes”, then you have passed the NSC with entry to Higher Certificate study. The two compulsory language subjects and Math's / Math's Lit are designated subjects but please be aware that even though LO is compulsory it does not count as a designated subject. If the answer to all four questions is “Yes”, then you have passed the NSC with entry to Diploma study. Bachelor’s Degree Pass Have you passed an official language on the Home Language level, i.e. 40% or more? Have you met the language requirement of the First Additional Language, i.e. 30% or more? Have you achieved 50% or more in at least 4 subjects? Note: If you have achieved over 50% in your official language on the Home Language level, it will also qualify as one of the subjects. Have you passed an additional 2 subjects with 30% or more? If the answer to all four questions is “Yes”, then you have passed the NSC with entry to Bachelor Degree study. The two compulsory language subjects and Math's / Math's Lit are designated subjects but please be aware that even though LO is compulsory it does not count as a designated subject.
