Presentation transcript:

Guidance Sheet: Language – Manager of the Nursery You are the manager of the nursery and you speak English. You often get parents coming into the nursery asking you questions about opening times, costs and whether you have spaces or not in the nursery. Today, you have an appointment with a French woman who speaks very little English and she wants to discuss her daughter attending your nursery. You need to find ways to communicate with her even though you cannot speak French, and she cannot speak English. Below is an up to date set of information about the nursery: The nursery is open from 8am-6pm. Morning sessions start at 8.30-12.00 = £25 Afternoon session are 13.00-16.30 = £25 All day sessions are 8.30-16.30 = £45 Extra time can be added on at a cost of £5 per half hour (30 minutes). Nursery can provide: Breakfast for £1, Lunch for £2 and Tea for £1 Alternatively the child can bring in their own food. At the moment the nursery currently has spaces on: Nursery likes to carry out 3 settling in sessions before a child starts at nursery. These can be completed as soon as the parent would like and the child can start straight after. Mon Tues Wed Thurs Fri am √ pm

Guidance Sheet: Language – Parent You are the parent of a 3 year old girl called ‘Celeste’. You do not speak any English and can only speak French. You want to go to college to learn to speak English and you need to get Celeste booked into nursery as you are keen for her to mix with other children her age and potentially learn English too. You have an appointment with the manager of the nursery and now you need to find out the following information: Can Celeste attend on Tuesday afternoons, Thursday all day and Friday mornings from 8am? What times can Celeste attend? Can Celeste have lunch on each day too, and breakfast on Friday mornings? How much does nursery cost? And what would it cost with food included? When can Celeste start? You need to find ways to communicate with the manager even though you cannot speak English, and she cannot speak French.

Guidance Sheet: Time – Key worker You are the Key worker of Ethan, a 1 year old boy. It is Ethan’s first day at nursery following his ‘settling in sessions’. You are keen to get a good detailed handover from Dad who is dropping Ethan off, and you have a some questions you want to ask Dad before he leaves. You want to know: What time does Ethan have an afternoon nap? Does Ethan have a comforter? Can Ethan drink from a cup himself? What does Ethan enjoy doing?

Guidance Sheet: Time - Parent You are the Parent of Ethan, a 1 year old boy. It is Ethan’s first day at nursery following his ‘settling in sessions’. You are worried about Ethan’s first day at nursery and consequently you are running behind time. When you get to nursery, you only have time to say ‘Hello’, hand Ethan over and then you know you need to be on your way as you are late for work. However, the Key Person seems to want to chat. Your responses are short in return as you have to be on your way. Ensure your body language shows that you are trying to leave.
