Spring 2018 Honors Co- and Extra-Curricular Activities: All the events and activities for the spring semester will be posted on the Honors Student Blackboard in e-Campus. All current Honors Program members are enrolled on the Blackboard. New students gain access to the Blackboard after full acceptance into Honors. Check the Honors Blackboard weekly for updates and opportunities for Co- and Extra-Curricular clock hours. Fall 2018 Scholarship Applications: Open on August 1. Deadline August 15. Students may apply for one of six $500 Richland Honors Scholarships and one $400 Joe Stanco Memorial Scholarships if they are: enrolled in at least 12 college-level DCCCD credit hours for fall 2018; enrolled in at least one Richland Honors course for fall 2018; college-level, including Dual Credit (RCHS students do not qualify); have a GPA 2 of 3.50 or higher. Eligible students who did not win a scholarship in the spring 2018 semester may be selected for the fall 2018 semester. Eligible students may find detailed directions for applying to Honors scholarships through the Honors Student Blackboard in e-Campus. Richland Honors Course and Program Information: To earn Honors credit for a course, the course must be designated a Richland Honors Course in eConnect (identifiable by section number ending in 090, or 091, or 092 and an Honors notation). All DCCCD Honors courses will be designated on your transcript with a # mark. To earn a Richland College Honors Certificate designation*, you must complete the following prior to transfer and/or completion of your Associate’s degree: Maintain an overall GPA of 3.25 or better Richland Honors courses: 9 credit hours earned at Richland with an “A” or “B” Co-Curricular activities: 3 clock hours (typically earned as part of your Honors courses) Extra-Curricular activities: 3 clock hours (typically earned through Honors events such as book club or on-campus events such as art exhibits, recitals, plays, or concerts) To earn a Richland College Honors Scholar designation*, you must complete the following prior to transfer and/or completion of your Associate’s degree: Richland Honors courses: 15 credit hours earned at Richland with an “A” or “B” Co-Curricular activities: 10 clock hours (typically earned as part of your Honors courses) Extra-Curricular activities: 6 clock hours (typically earned through Honors events or on-campus events such as guest lectures, art exhibits, recitals, plays, or concerts) References to clock hours are for the entire time period that you attend Richland College prior to graduation or transfer, not per semester. *Both Richland College Scholar and Richland Certificate students will have an “H” next to their names in the commencement program. Only Richland College Scholars will wear the Honors stole at the commencement ceremony. Stoles may be purchased at the Richland bookstore beginning in April 2018 if you are on the bookstore’s list of Scholars. If your name is not on the list, come to the Honors Offices. How to Succeed in Your Honors Classes (and in college in general): Be proactive. Attend all classes and labs. Talk to your professors early and frequently by going to their office hours. Participate in class discussion, and ask questions during class. Complete all assignments on time, even the ones that tell you to “read” a chapter. When college professors ask you to read, they expect you to learn what you read by taking notes, creating questions, and thinking them through before the next class. Come prepared to every class so that you may ask questions and participate in discussion. Ask for help if you are confused or struggling. Your professor can help, but you can also talk to the Honors Advisor or The Learning Center. Ask for help early in the semester.
