Regional Caregivers Conference Southwest 2019 Never Quite Flying The Plane Regional Caregivers Conference Southwest 2019 Never Quit Flying the Plane The Amazing Difference Planning Can Make Jim Blythe, Navy Veteran, Financial Counselor, Author, Listener, Alliance4TheBrave Radio Show Host 214.502.4600 Financial Services NMLS #311548 www.JimBlythe.net

Never Quite Flying The Plane Regional Caregivers Conference Southwest 2019 Questions: What causes people to give up? What is the largest cause of divorce? What is the biggest fear of Seniors? Why are 22 Veterans a day committing suicide? Why do so many family caregivers “Burn out”? What can we do about it? JimBlythe.net www.JimBlythe.net

Never Quite Flying The Plane Regional Caregivers Conference Southwest 2019 Aviation training, real estate planning, Naval training, and financial counseling gave me the ideas for Planning to Change and Challenges of Change and changed my life to help others. I know the danger of getting hopeless and helpless: Boot camp - with a world famous DI: “Never give up!” Naval aviation -Lemoore CA in the back seat of a jet fighter: “Never quit flying the plane, no matter what!” JimBlythe.net www.JimBlythe.net

Regional Caregivers Conference Southwest 2019 Tragic lesson - as part-owner of a private plane: Lack of planning and training combined with bad judgment and bad circumstances and resulted in disaster - A metaphor for our lives. That pilot DID quit flying the plane with terrible results. The lesson keeps repeating - I see families giving up, lives wasted, dreams shattered, and spirits broken. 87% of juveniles in detention become felons, and felons keep returning to prison. JimBlythe.net

Regional Caregivers Conference Southwest 2019 Change Your Approach – STOP Emotional Roller Coaster: Military lesson - Navy Seal quoted when asked why the strenuous training and planning of the Seal Team? “When everything goes wrong, we fall to the lowest level of our training.” Their training and planning is the key to success, no matter what hits.  What we want vs the reality of life. It hasn’t been easy since Eve failed in the Garden.  Are we using all our assets and talents? The “easy” path (no planning) leads to disaster.  Accomplishment = Planning/Preparation/Training + Opportunity. (Can’t know everything that’s going to happen, but more training brings better results.) JimBlythe.net

Regional Caregivers Conference Southwest 2019 Thinking/Sharing -> Goals -> Plans:   Discuss: What do we want to happen - our goal(s) together? Ask and LISTEN. When Carees don’t want to talk, LISTEN when they say what they want, make notes, and discuss later when they are calm and cooperative: “I have heard you say …, is that what you want?”  Written Goal(s): What, how, when? Get everyone on the same page. Make a notebook that contains the Plan and keep it updated. JimBlythe.net

Regional Caregivers Conference Southwest 2019 Research and resources Wisdom of mentors and teachers, CSA  Workshops, Conferences  Books, manuals, or internet resources  What you don’t know can and will hurt you. JimBlythe.net

Regional Caregivers Conference Southwest 2019 Written Plan: The power of writing it down. (Harvard Graduating Class Challenge) Alternatives: important when the unexpected happens Priorities: Biggest First illustration  Tools:  Budget - what will it cost? Assets: What are they? How to use them? Documentation: Wills, POAs, Med Directives, details and directions  Stop signs to expect: objections, health changes, financial changes JimBlythe.net

Regional Caregivers Conference Southwest 2019 Alternatives, safe harbor (when do you stay on the ground?)  Accountability – Use Plan: Measure, adjust, revise ...  Real assets Family assets Community Take care of ourselves: We are on a journey. What can happen?  Mental fatigue Physical fatigue Overwhelm/Panic   Isolation/Depression JimBlythe.net

Regional Caregivers Conference Southwest 2019 Survive to Serve  Mental exercise: Read, discuss, learn new things, listen to self and others. (TV = numbing) Physical training/exercise: get up off the couch. (Stroke lady story) Share your experience – learn from others. TEAM: Do NOT do this alone. (brushing teeth example) ASK FOR HELP, even when you don’t think you need it! (real estate development experience) Implement, evaluate, adjust.  JimBlythe.net

Regional Caregivers Conference Southwest 2019 When the goal is achieved, what’s next?  Take time to reflect: celebrate wins, and learn from losses.  Continue: Thinking/Sharing -> Goals -> Plans   Use your experience to help others on their journey. JimBlythe.net
