Today-Objective:Human Environment Interaction in East Asia Explore the benefits and problems of the Three Gorges Dam in China. Understand the use of space in overcrowded urban Japan. Review the countries of East Asia Review the Landforms of East Asia Examine a population Pyramid & line graph on China’s population Pages 628-631

The Problem- Flooding has been a big problem in China See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9V_gkxjZIk&feature=relmfu

How have the Chinese responded to their problem? They have been building the Three Gorges Dam of the Chang Jiang River(sometimes called the Yangtze River)

Three Gorges Dam The Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest capacity hydroelectric power station. The dam body was completed in 2006. The Dam was functioning in 2012.

THREE GORGES DAM DAM LOCATED ALONG CHANG JIANG RIVER TO CONTROL FLOODING

What are the positive effects? The dam controls the flooding of the Chang Jiang River. The dam generates huge amounts of electrical power. The dam makes it easier for ships to reach the center of China. ( A series of locks will raise ocean-going ships.)

What are the negative effects? Millions of people have been moved because of the dam. The dam is costing far more than the Chinese government expected. First it was going to cost 11 billion but was 75 billion. The giant reservoir (lake) created by the dam put hundreds of square miles under water. This includes the homes of many animals some which went extinct.

What do you think? Is the Three River Gorges Dam worth the costs? Why or why not? River Dolphins- very rare

Problem in Japan- Large Population & Little Space Most of the cities of Japan are on the coast & near mountains. There is no space to grow.

Tokyo is the largest city Japanese cities are some of the most densely populated areas in the world Tokyo is the largest city in Japan

Problem Japanese cities have become polluted. PCBs (industrial pollutants) are poisoning animals & people. If PCBs are passed from the pollution in the factory to the fish in the ocean then what could it do to those who eat the fish?

PCB’S INDUSTRIAL POLLUTANTS THAT BUILD UP IN ANIMAL TISSUE THAT CAN CAUSE DISEASE AND BIRTH DEFECTS

How do a lot of people live in a small space? Houses & rooms are smaller Many live in apartments

Capsule Hotels in Japan provide tiny rooms for overnight guests Lets look at a capsule Hotel in Tokyo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0ViYfN420k&feature=fvsr

Do you think you could learn to live in the small spaces that the Japanese live in? Why or why not?

Next- Review the countries of East Asia Sea of Japan Yellow Sea East China Sea Pacific Ocean South China Sea

Landforms of East Asia What mountains Border China, India & Nepal? Mongolia Mongolia What desert is Here? What Peninsula Is this? What mountains? What mountains Border China, India & Nepal? What island is This?

Landforms of East Asia Mongolia Mongolia Korean Peninsula Taiwan

Population of China China Population Line Graph 1961-2003 What are the 2 largest age groups in China during 2006? How many girls are there in China ages 0-4? Boys 0-4? What do you think will happen to the population when those who are 0-4 reach their 30s? What year did China reach a billion people? How many people lived in China in 1963? How many people lived in China in 2003?
