Absent/Tardy Policy Please send in a note every time your child is absent. You can write it in the planner, but it is preferred if you write it on a separate piece of paper. If your child goes to the doctor, please send in a doctor’s note. If your child arrives after 8:40, you must check in with the office before sending your child to class. Please make sure you are walking in with your child if you arrive after 8:40.

Cooperative Learning Cooperative learning: Cooperative learning is a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught but also for helping teammates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement.

Planner Policy Planners are used as a communication tool for teachers and parents. This is where you can find info about the school, homework, calendar, etc. They must be signed every night in the top Reading section AND at the bottom.

Homework All students will have 30 minutes of Reading each night. This includes reading the Studies Weekly newspaper. Language Arts passage work/fluency each night except for Friday. The passage work and fluency is sent home on Mondays. 1 black and white math sheet, front and back, each night. Colored pages are classwork and can be used for extra support (not required to be completed). There will be other activities/projects throughout the year as well.

Go Math Our Math curriculum called Go Math. It is a program that goes along with the Florida Standards. It is based on 4 Critical Areas: 1. Whole Number Operations: Develop understanding of multiplication and division strategies for basic multiplication facts within 100 2. Fractions: Develop understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with a numerator 1) 3. Measurement: Developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area. 4. Math Assessments Your child will be taking the FSA Math Assessment in the Spring. To be prepared for this, Go Math chapter tests will be administered on the computer. Paper will be provided for them to show their work. Paper tests will NOT come home, but your child’s score for each test will be shown both on Think Central and Skyward. You will be able to see the actual questions and answers on Think Central after each assessment is completed.

We are writing but not full until we learn all the pieces and the parts, so it is great when the pieces are put together.

World Lab (Science/S.S) Science Units- Space, Properties and Changes in Matter, Energy, Life Sciences (Plants and Animals), Science Fair and the Practice of Science Social Studies Units- Map Skills, Government, Economics

World Lab Journal Please be sure to review your child’s journal each night and make sure that the journal is returning to school each day. In the journal, you will find vocabulary words, notes from the lessons, and labs that are completed in class. During social studies units, your child will also have a newspaper that should travel to and from school each day. The newspapers are needed for the end of unit tests, so it is important to not to lose them.

Science Fair Students will be participating in a Science Fair project that will be completed at school with their class. These projects will demonstrate their knowledge of the scientific method and scientific processes.

There will be 8-10 grades given per quarter in each subject. Grading Scale A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 There will be 8-10 grades given per quarter in each subject.

Dividend (Volunteers) Please go to the Seminole County website to sign up to volunteer in any capacity (www.scps.k12.fl.us). Then click the tab on the top that says “I want to..” AND then click “Get Involved.” Once you sign up, it can take at least 3 weeks to be approved. You must be approved at least 3 weeks before going on any field trips.

Field Trips We are hoping to go on 1 to 2 field trips this school year (more information to come).

Lunch Policies Lunch is a different time on Wednesday (12:05-12:35). For birthday and class celebrations, please ONLY send in “store bought” items that are pre-portioned into individual servings with enough for everyone in the class (i.e. brownies, cookies, or cupcakes). Please DO NOT send in homemade items and items that require cutting (i.e. entire cakes, cookie cakes, pies). Additionally, please DO NOT bring or send in balloons, flowers or other props since there is not room in the cafeteria or classroom for these items. Thank you for your help with making these celebrations a success! Siblings can not come to lunch. All visitors must be a registered dividend.

Classroom Celebrations The students will have 3 parties a year (before Winter Break, Valentine’s Day, and End of the Year).

Monday Folder The folder must be signed each Monday after you have seen everything inside. This is where you will find important information from teachers and the school. This is where you will find Report Cards/Progress Reports as well. Students will receive a progress report and report card each quarter.
