Secondary Economic Activities Heavy and light Industry by James Donohoe Pierce McDonald Rian O’Domhnaill

What is a light industry? the manufacturing of small and light articles that are easy to transport. Examples of this would be manufacturing clothes and consumer electronics Workers sewing clothes A T-shirt A processer for a computer A Smart Phone Examples of the finished product you’d find in these industries Workers at Intel working in a clean room.

Intel Ireland- A Light Industry 1989 in Leixlip County Kildare Employs 4,500 people Intel Ireland is Irelands largest flagship companies and the first big technology firms to come to Ireland Make microprocessors or mainly known as Microchips Intel is located on green field site

Inputs of Intel’s site A clean room Purified Water Silicon Wafers- What the micro-chips are made on Labour- Qualified graduates in engineering and science Electricity- Power source Clean Rooms- where the microchip manufacturing takes place Air Purification systems- to eliminate dust in the clean rooms and clean the air Capital- Financial investment in the new techniques to stay ahead of the competition A clean room

Processes of Intel In the clean rooms workers wear clothing to prevent dust from body and clothes from reaching the silicon wafers 1 Microchips are made from the wafers this includes about 300 manufacturing steps 2 A large number of switches are created on the microchips to test if the microchips work and then shipped abroad 3

Outputs of Intel Microchips Waste water- Treated and then realased Solvent waste- Carefully disposed of

What is a heavy Industry? A heavy industry is the manufacturing of goods that involves heavy raw material inputs and heavy end product outputs Some inputs are Iron and steel, Some outputs are cars and Ships. A ship being built A car being put together

Rusal Aughinish-A Heavy Industry Rusal Aughinish Refine Alumina from raw Bauxite Based on Aughinish Island Imported from brazil by ship therefore Located on the coast Transported up the deep Shannon estuary Waste material stored on west side of large site
