Solve by balancing coefficients GCSE Edexcel Higher: November 2017 Paper 1, Q11 1 2 cakes and 3 rolls have a total cost of £7.20 5 cakes and 6 rolls have a total cost of £15.60 Work out the cost on one cake and the cost of one roll. 2c + 3r = 720 5c + 6r = 1560 x 2 4c + 6r = 1440 Solve by balancing coefficients and then elimination 5c + 6r = 1560 Subtract 4c + 6r = 1440 c + 0r = 120 c = 120 720 - 240 480 Substitute to find r (2 x 120) + 3r = 720 240 + 3r = 720 3r = 480 1.20 cake £ r = 160 1.60 roll £ (Total for Question 1 is 4 marks)
