Figure 1 Neurogenesis in the Carotid Body and the Subventricular Zone (A) The carotid body of the peripheral nervous system is located at the bifurcation of the carotid artery. Under normoxic conditions, clusters of dopaminergic glomus cells (green) are associated with glia-like sustentacular cells that express glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP+) (yellow) and a few Nestin+ cells (blue). Afferents to the central nervous system (CNS) are represented in blue and blood vessels in red. Under hypoxic conditions, GFAP+ sustentacular cells proliferate and convert into GFAP−/Nestin+ transit-amplifying cells that give rise to new tyrosine hydroxylase-positive dopaminergic cells. Note that following a return to normoxic conditions, Nestin+ transit-amplifying cells convert back to GFAP+ resting sustentacular cells. (B) In the adult subventricular zone (SVZ), GFAP+ stem cells (yellow) give rise to GFAP− transit amplifying cells (blue) that ultimately give rise to migratory neuroblasts (green).
