P.S. S7L2- Students will be able to describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. Today’s EQ: How does the digestive system work with our bodies other major organ systems in order to maintain our state of homeostasis?

Today’s class session: Work Session: Complete Guided Reading Notes Homework: Section Review Worksheets over the Body’s digestive system. We will have our Human Body Systems Test next Thursday.

Guided Reading (EQ) It breaks down food into molecules, which are absorbed into the blood and it eliminates our waste. 1.Teeth: Help to break and grind food into smaller pieces. 2. Salivary Glands: Where saliva is made, which begins chemical digestion.

Guided Reading 24.1 Cont. 3. Pharnyx: (Throat) Tube connected to mouth that splits in two (one leads to lungs and one to the Esophagus). 4. Epiglottis: Flap of tissue that seals off your windpipe so that food can’t enter. 5. Esophagus: Tube connected to Pharnyx and Stomach which food moves through. 6. Stomach: A J-shaped muscle pouch where mechanical digestion and chemical digestion occurs.

Guided Reading 24.1 Cont. 7. Liver: Largest organ in the body. It makes bile, stores and filters blood, and stores excess sugars. 8. Gallbladder: A sac-shaped organ that stores bile produced by the liver. 9. Pancreas: Organ that makes digestive enzymes and hormones that regulate sugar levels.

Guided Reading 24.1 Cont. 10. Small intestines: Organ where most of the breakdown of food happens and most of the nutrients from food are absorbed. 11. Large intestines: The wider and shorter portion that removes water from mostly digested food and turns waste into feces or stool. (poo) 12. Rectum: Last part of large intestines which stores feces until they are removed.

Guided Reading 24.1 Cont. 13. Anus: Opening which feces pass through to the outside of the body. 14. 3 Jobs of digestive system: Breaking down food into molecules the body can use. Absorbing molecules into the blood. Eliminating waste from the body.
