Proposal for joint activities of Life-Members and History Committee Dr. Jacob Baal-Schem Member, LM Committee 2013 Past-member, History Committee

Basics IEEE Life Members are the best sources for historical information on the development of the technologies in which IEEE is involved. Many members participated actively in the development of techniques and equipment during their activities in Academia and Industry. It is therefore mandatory to incite Life Members to participate in activities related to the preserving of the history of “electro- technology”.

Vision by History sub-committee (2010) To cooperate in promoting the collection, writing, and dissemination of historical information in the fields covered by IEEE technical and professional activities, as well as historical information about the IEEE and its predecessor organizations through joint activities of the Life Members Committee, LMAGs and individual Life Members and the History Committee and History Center. Members: Baal-Schem, Feisel, Ohno, Saam

Proposals by History sub-committee Basic agreement between LMC & HC Chairs Nominate an ad-hoc working group of two LMC representatives and two HC reps. to propose the activities to be performed and the implementation process. To nominate a History Center contact person to Life Members. To raise the subject at next LMC meeting (end April) and at breakouts at 2011 Section Congress To include reports on LM tech-tours in GHN

Actual activities proposed (2013) A series of lectures at LMAGS or Life Member meetings related to the GHN (Global History Network) An article in the Life Members Newsletter regarding possible contributions of Life Members to preserving of History of Technology. Forming “History teams” in LMAGs who will work on collecting information on the History of Technological development in their country/state. Incite IEEE Life Members to write articles to be included in the GHN. Get Life Members to participate in IEEE History Conferences (possibly by grants from the LM Committee) to present papers. Organize a yearly contest on History activities by LMAGs

Response from History Center We would be happy to give lectures to LMAGs on historical activities in which Life members can participate. We have done this on an ad hoc basis for some time , but it would be nice to expand the program. For Sections outside the Eastern US we could recruit History Committee members and LMC members and History Center staff could supply the Power point presentations. History teams in LMAGs are a great idea. So is the idea of History contest.
