Presentation transcript:

Opportunity to innovate and promote a GM vision of HWBE

Background: 4 x Generic HWBE’s run over 2018/2019 Mixed economy of generic and disease specific events

What we learned… Administrative time & Effort to organise them Does not appeal to all patients Problem with being a regional treatment centre trying to cater for local patients No single directory of events for region (Generic, Disease specific, Supportive care) Potential repetition of effort as a result of silo working Well received and reviewed by the patients and their families Excellent feedback about the positive reinforcement of the day

Idea. “A GM wide event” – Urology nurse specialist “Cut down on repetition and better utilise resources”

How this would work in reality. A personalised offer to compliment the existing activity. Central location away from hospitals, potentially twice a year. A promise to our community as to how we will care for you Pre, Peri & Post treatment. Ensuring we do not have a “one size fits all model” Opportunity to innovate.

Broadest offer possible Aimed at patients who have moved beyond treatment, are in a community setting and who are in a stage of “self management” – but would still benefit from attending such an event Health and wellbeing events as they current stand, generic and disease specific Patients requiring of more specialised and tailored advise from their healthcare professionals – smaller groups of patients accommodated how the disease groups see fit Patients who do not require support at all, but may at some stage engage with the other levels of support.

Continued… Generic and disease specific information A chance to meet patients from all over the city A chance for Carers to meet from all over the city A chance to go beyond a “Marketplace” but have a “City of support” from all over Greater Manchester

Potential barriers: Attendance Volume of people might put patients off, rather than cause them to engage Money

This approach would… Offer an approach to suit all patients. This style of event would be widely publicised across all public areas in Manchester. Rally & Involve transport companies, bus companies to promote this. This is a vision of Manchester’s health and should be lauded as such.

Innovation, continued. Amazing opportunity to innovate beyond RP principles. Potential to host a 2nd day and flip the purpose to a strong public health message. Involve secondary schools of GM to promote the work, discuss what cancer is, address the myths – “Normalise” the conversation. Work of GMHSC – GM cancer conference and work ongoing there- Smoke free city, Chris Boardmans Bee lines – partnership with local council to educate. Cigarettes and vaping – sugar, obesity and exercise. Alcohol. Blunt conversations about the stark reality of the health of the city. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Potential outcomes: Supporting our cancer population in an approach that would offer the broadest range of support for HWBE An ability to promote and educate our population about cancer and its consequences, but also what can be done to limit development. A showcase for our region of how we “Do things differently”

Questions / Discussions Thank you.
