Presented by: Chris Gallagher 24th October 2013 Environmentally Superior Implementation of Electrical Hardware through Modular Programmable Logic Devices & Eco Design Paper by C.Fitzgerald, J.Walsh and I.Grout Presented by: Chris Gallagher 24th October 2013

Introduction This paper observes environmental considerations can be incorporated into the design stage of an electronic product. Furthermore it explores how modular units such as PLD’s can be reused to perform the same task in a different device.

Three most interesting findings? Consumer electronics typically only have a lifespan of 12 to 18months, even though they would be capable of correctly functioning for much longer. The amount of waste generated during the manufacture of PCB’s and IC’s significantly exceeds the amount of the final product Eco-Design is very important to the sustainability of a product.

How Important are collection rates to a manufacturing business model? Collection rates of current generation subsystems are extremely important to a remanufacturing business model. If the collection the rate of PLD’s are high, then a system can be functionally upgraded without changing the hardware. The NRE (Non-Recurring Engineering Cost) can be dramatically reduced

How can High collection rates be achieved? Collection rates can be increased by adapting PLD’s for use across a wide range of products. It is important to note that a SLCA must be performed to ensure that the
