Francesco Redi disproved the Theory of Spontaneous Generation What did Redi prove? Flies laid the eggs that produced the maggots. The insects did not spontaneously grow off of the meat. BIOGENESIS - Living things come from other living things.

1. ALL LIVING THINGS HAVE CELLS. * CELLS = Membrane-covered structure containing all materials necessary for life.

2. ALL LIVING THINGS SENSE AND RESPOND TO CHANGE. STIMULUS = A change in an organism’s environment that affects the activity of the organism. HOMEOSTASIS = The maintenance of a stable internal environment.

3. ALL LIVING THINGS REPRODUCE. ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION = A single parent produces offspring identical to the parent. SEXUAL REPRODUCTION = Two parents produce offspring that share characteristics of both parents.

4. ALL LIVING THINGS HAVE DNA. DNA = A special molecule containing proteins that determine the characteristics in an organism. HEREDITY = The transmission of characteristics from one generation to the next.

5. ALL LIVING THINGS USE ENERGY. METABOLISM = The total of all chemical activities the organism performs.

6. ALL LIVING THINGS GROW AND DEVELOP. · Single-celled organisms grow when the cell gets larger. · Multi-cellular organisms grow by increasing their number of cells.
