UNIT 1 REVIEW GEOGRAPHY

WHAT IS HUMAN GEOGRAPHY

HUMAN GEOGRAPHY It is the study of where and why human activities are located where they are Its emphasis is on people: where they are, what they are like, how they interact over space, and what kinds of landscapes of human use as they erect on the natural landscapes they occupy.

KEY TERMS

LOCATION The position that something occupies on the Earth’s surface.

PLACE A specific point on Earth distinguished by a particular characteristic.

SCALE The relationship between the portion of Earth being studied and Earth as a whole.

PATTERN Geometric arrangement of objects in space.

REGION Theme in geography involving a spatial unit that has many places sharing similar characteristics

GLOBALIZATION A force or process that involves the entire world and results in making something worldwide in scope.

Global Positioning System (GPS) System of satellites used to determine an exact location on the global grid.

Geographic Information System (GIS) Computer program that stores geographic data and produces maps to show the data.

TYPES OF MAPS

CHLOROPLETH Shows a pattern of some variable, such as voting pattern, by using various colors or degrees of shading.

PROPORTIONAL-SYMBOL Use some symbol (circles) to display the frequency of the variable. The larger the symbol, the higher the frequency.

DOT DENSITY Maps that simply use dots to represent the frequency of a variable in a given area.

ISOLINE Maps that display the lines that connect points of equal value.
