Desert Life

Weather The weather is usually very hot in the desert. A desert is a place that has little or no rain. Therefore, there is very little water in the desert.

These are called SAND DUNES.

The Sahara desert is the largest one in Africa. Sand Dunes are sometimes called sand seas because the dunes look and act like slowly moving waves.

Not all deserts are hot. The Gobi desert in Asia is called a cold desert. The Gobi has extremes of climate from hot summers to freezing cold winters.

Cactus often grows in deserts.

Plants and animals of the desert have become adapted to survive on little water. Desert plants and animals such as cactus and camels can store water inside their bodies.

Camels in the Sahara desert can survive without a drink of water! Some camels have one hump, some have two. In many countries, camels are kept as farm animals. They provide people with milk and meat. Their skin is used to make tents, rugs and clothes.

Camels of the Desert A camel has long, sturdy legs that help it to stride across the desert. Long, thick eyelashes protect the camel’s eyes during a sand storm.

What is an OASIS? An oasis is a place in the desert where water is found and plants often grow.
