Houston K-8 School Facility Capacity 2016-2017 CBEDS 11/27/17 Enrollment Below Capacity Houston K-8 496 190 203 293

Houston K-8 School Current Enrollment by Grade Kinder….24 1st………..12 2nd……….11 3rd……….20 4th……….20 5th ………11 6th……….13 7th .........44 8th………..48 Total Enrollment: 203 Total FTE: 8 *Combination Classes Note: Current enrollment includes IDAs and overflows.

Challenges as a Result of Low Enrollment Limited resources (District adds additional support) Combination classes across K-6 Middle School Program implementation limitations Limitations for grade level collaboration and planning Staff take on multiple tasks Additional facility modifications ½ Time Administrator

Consideration K-6 Houston students to Victor 7-8 Houston students to Lockeford Move Serna Charter Dual Immersion program to Houston Develop late enrollment process for Houston students who wish to stay at Houston and enroll in the Dual Immersion program

Benefits Houston facility would remain open with more effective use of the facility Houston students could be considered for Dual Immersion Program and remain at Houston Students would be in fewer combination classes Measure U and other facility funds could be saved if the current Serna facility is not a K-8 Current Serna Facility could be used to address other Board priorities with less Measure U expenditures

Issues to Address Transportation routes/changes Staff transfers Attendance area adjustments Parent/Community Forums

Victor Elementary & Lockeford K-8 School Capacity Note: Houston Current Attendance (without IDA’s/Overflows) K-6th…….Total: 96 7-8th ……Total: 75 Capacity study does not include current rooms used for PE, Music, Computer Lab, RSP, and Office Space.

Serna Enrollment

Serna K-8 Charter Facility Capacity School Capacity 2016-2017 CBEDS 11/27/17 Enrollment Below Capacity Serna Charter 375 348 364 11

Serna Current Enrollment Kinder……....43 1st…………….42 2nd…………...42 3rd ……………42 4th ……………42 5th…………….41 6th…………….37 7th…………….37 8th………….…38 Total Enrollment: 364 Total FTE: 18

Current Serna Facility Issues High interest for Dual Immersion program district-wide Waiting list School of choice Facility is not designed for a K-8 (Example: no adequate playground) No current classroom space available for growth Kindergarten housed in basement in small spaces Majority of classrooms do not meet CDE 960 Square Feet standards Limitations for additional portables Middle School Program implementation limitations Will need additional facility modifications if kept a K-8

Next Steps Parent meetings at Houston and Serna Staff will continue to explore this option if Board is interested in more information Parent meetings at Houston and Serna Further exploration of impacts on transportation, staff, facilities, etc.
