SIGNIFICANT FIGURES.
Significant Figures.  All measurements are inaccurate  Precision of measuring device  Human error  Faulty technique.
Aim: How can we perform mathematical calculations with significant digits? Do Now: State how many sig. figs. are in each of the following: x 10.
The Scientific Method 1. Using and Expressing Measurements Scientific notation is written as a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by 10 raised to a power.
Counting Significant Figures:
A measured value Number and unit Example 6 ft.. Accuracy How close you measure or hit a true value or target.
SIGNIFICANT FIGURES. ACCURACY VS. PRECISION  In labs, we are concerned by how “correct” our measurements are  They can be accurate and precise  Accurate:
Measurement book reference p Accuracy  The accuracy of the measurement refers to how close the measured value is to the true or accepted value.
SIG FIGS Section 2-3 Significant Figures Often, precision is limited by the tools available. Significant figures include all known digits plus one estimated.
It’s really not that bad.  The # of digits reported for the value of a measured or calculated quantity, indicating the precision of the value  4 Rules.

SIGNIFICANT FIGURES AMOLE WHAT & WHY?  Refer to them as “Sig Figs” for short  Used to communicate the degree of precision measured  Example -

Significant figures (sig figs) How many numbers mean anything. When we measure something, we can (and do) always estimate between the smallest marks. How.
Scientific Notation. Scientific Notation Used for very large or very small numbers, to make life easier Wavelength of an X-ray –
Significant Figures. What is a significant figure? There are 2 kinds of numbers: –Exact: the amount of money in your account. Known with certainty.
Significant Figure Rules. Rule Number 1 All non zero digits are significant. Examples 1179 – 4 significant figures significant figures

Significant Figures SPH3U. Precision: How well a group of measurements made of the same object, under the same conditions, actually agree with one another.
Uncertainty in measurement  Every measurement has error associated with it.  The more precise the measurement the less error.  Error in a measurement.

Significant Figures! A.K.A. Sig. Figs.

Actual measured #’s, not placeholders Two techniques: Numbers with decimals Numbers without decimals

Zero's in front of the number do not count. NUMBERS WITH DECIMALS Zero's in front of the number do not count. All other digits including the ZERO’S at the end are significant!

PRACTICE #1 100.0 0.002 2.04 0.023420 = 4 = 1 = 3 = 5

NUMBERS WITHOUT DECIMALS All digits count except 0’s at the end. Sandwiched zeros count!

PRACTICE #2 = 3 = 1 = 4 154 100 10000 65010

PRACTICE #3 = 5 = 3 1000.0 10001 1.00 x 105 4.24 x 107

SUMMARY 0’s in front don’t count No decimal? 0’s in back don’t count Sci. Not.? All digits count!

From now on put all answers into scientific notation! Your answer: 100 Only 1 sig fig! 1.00 x 102 From now on put all answers into scientific notation!
