Established policy of containment (Truman Doctrine) supports Marshall Plan, orders Berlin Airlift, signs NATO, contains communism in Korean War. Ended McCarthyism, made progress with Civil Rights in racial conflicts. Former Governor of California, cut spending but “hawkish” on defense, release of American hostages in Iran (1981), Reagan Doctrine (Star Wars which is nuclear weapons in space), and had U.S. invade Grenada (fear of communism). Initiates Desert Storm by sending troops to Kuwait (First Gulf War), President during end of Cold War and fall of Berlin Wall (1989). Soviet Union ceased to exist under his Presidency.

Invokes enormous military machine, Salt I (1972), supplied Vietnamese, Signs Helsinki Accords in 1975. Afghanistan (1979) Perestroika- (restructuring) a radical program of economic reform- political/economic, Glasnost- (openness) political parties, civil liberty, and public debate accepted. Allowed breakup of Warsaw Pact and Comecon, ended Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, collapse of Berlin Wall (Nov. 1989). Russia’s first democratically elected president, signed the START II nuclear disbarment treaty (1993), sent forces into Chechnya (1994 and 1999) There with fall of Soviet Union.
