How to Navigate Expository Writing Finding Your Way

What is Expository Writing? Factual writing that explains or informs. There are 4 methods of organizing or arranging information in expository writing. Cause and Effect Chronological Compare and Contrast Problem and Solution

Cause and Effect Cause is what makes something happen. Effect is what happens. Ex: An article about how the sun can be harmful to your skin if you don’t use sunscreen. Cause: Not using sunscreen and staying out in the sun. Effect: Skin damage

Chronological Order The arrangement of events in the order in which they happened. Ex: A manual that tells you how to put a desk together.

Compare and Contrast Shows how two or more subjects are similar and different. Ex: An essay about the similarities and differences between city life and country life.

Problem and Solution A problem is identified and a solution is given. Ex: An article about global warming and what we can do to help slow it down.
