Open and Closed Syllables Ms. Taylor 2nd Grade 770-578-7200 jessica.taylor2@cobbk12.org Ms. Taylor’s Sailors Week of August 13, 2018 A Peek at Our Week WEEKLY HOMEWORK Reading: Reading Workshop Launch We will review reading workshop routines, practice building reading stamina, and learn what a good reader does before, during, and after reading. We will also learn how to talk and grow our ideas about reading with a reading partner. Writing Choose a writing prompt from the August writing calendar Math: Place Value We will learn that the three digits of a three digit number represent amounts of hundred, tens, and ones. We will also learn how to read and write numbers to 1,000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Math Go to the class webpage, click on “links”, then play “Pac Man Expanded Form Practice” Writing: Personal Narratives We will learn how to write a narrative that recounts a well elaborated short sequence of events, includes details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, uses transition words, and provides a sense of closure. Spelling Complete S.O.S. for the weekly words – are, do, every Choose a spelling activity from the August Speller’s Choice Social Studies: Georgia Regions We will locate and compare major topographical features of Georgia and describe how these features define Georgia’s surface. We will locate and compare Blue Ride, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Ridge & Valley, and Appalachian Plateau. We will also locate the Savannah, Flint, and Chattahoochee Rivers. Reading Read for 20 minutes S.S./ Science Go to the class webpage, click on “links”, then click on “Regions of Georgia” and read about the regions Class Blog: http://www.cobblearning.net/taylor2/ Spelling & Word Study Spelling/ Reading Rule Language Skill Mark Your Calendar Open and Closed Syllables Open: One vowel followed by no consonants. The syllable is open and the vowel can say its name. Ex: me, hi, no Closed: One vowel followed by one or more consonants. The consonant closes in the syllable like a door, and the vowel is short. Ex: met, him, nod Proper Nouns We will notice how nouns are used in our reading and writing. We will also learn how to capitalize proper nouns (names of people, places, and things).
