What Do Phlebotomists Do? Phlebotomists (PBTs) work directly with patients. The laboratory depends on the phlebotomy technician to collect quality samples from the patient to produce quality laboratory results. To do this, the phlebotomy technician must create an atmosphere of trust and confidence with patients while drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe, and reliable manner. Phlebotomists are the ambassadors providing the face for the laboratory. They work directly with patients to collect quality samples for analysis. Phlebotomy is an invasive procedure. It requires professional and technical knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Phlebotomy Technician Labor Market and Salary Information Employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 25 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. Hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, blood donor centers, and other locations will need phlebotomists to perform bloodwork. Summary Median annual wage in May 2018: $34,480 $16.58 per hour Number of Jobs 2016, 122,700 Job Outlook, 2016-2026: 25% (Much faster than average) Employment Change, 2016- 2026: 30,100 Salary is dependent on where you work. Higher salaries are likely in a large urban facility. A typical salary range is shown on this slide. Reference: https://data.virginialmi.com http://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/phlebotomists.htm

Where Phlebotomists Work Phlebotomists work in many different facilities including: private laboratories, hospital laboratories, reference laboratories, blood banks, medical offices, and clinics. Most often, phlebotomists work under the direction of a Medical Laboratory Scientist. Phlebotomy is a stand alone career, and a stepping stone or added skill , to other health related careers.
