NSRP Electrical Technologies Panel Meeting – July 23-24, 2019 NSRP Fiber Optic Ecosystem Enabler to Enhanced Capabilities Giovanni Tomasi Chief Technology Officer RSL Fiber Systems, LLC NSRP Electrical Technologies Panel Meeting – July 23-24, 2019

NSRP FIBER OPTIC ECOSYSTEM – ENABLER TO ENHANCED CAPABILITIES The NSRP Fiber optic efforts are an enabler to critical U.S. Navy Programs and Priorities, providing the benefits of the fiber optic technologies well beyond each of the original programs’ objectives. National Shipbuilding Research Program: Insertion and application of innovative fiber optic technologies into the U.S. Navy and U.S. shipbuilding industry; Enhancement to current shipboard fiber optic systems; Enabler to new and emerging critical technologies.

NSRP FIBER OPTIC ECOSYSTEM – ENABLER TO ENHANCED CAPABILITIES Example: Fiber Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing (Raman) COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS U.S. NAVY APPLICATIONS NSRP Conveyor Belt Rollers, Motor, and Gearbox Monitoring MV and HV Electrical Panels Insulated Bus Pipe Pipelines Monitoring

NSRP FIBER OPTIC ECOSYSTEM – ENABLER TO ENHANCED CAPABILITIES NSRP FIBER OPTIC EFFORTS (Past and Present) Fiber Optic Testing with Go/No-Go Acceptance Criteria (2011) Fiber-Optics Manufacturing and Installation (2012) Alternatives to Fiber Optic Connectors (2015) Fiber Optic Testing Enhancement for Cost Reduction (2016) Shipboard Fiber Optic Cables Design Enhancements (2019) Fiber Optic Testing Enhancement for Cost Reduction Follow On (2019) Fusion Splice Enclosure at Equipment (2019)

NSRP FIBER OPTIC ECOSYSTEM – ENABLER TO ENHANCED CAPABILITIES NSRP FIBER OPTIC “ENABLED” PROGRAMS Distributed Temperature Sensing for Inspection of Electrical Panels on Navy Ships (2017) Qualification Testing of Insulated Bus Pipe (IBP) for Shipboard (2019-2020) New / Future Programs Power Over Fiber (ONR N00014-19-C-2006) Remote Source Lighting with Diode Laser Light Sources Non-Electric Topside

NSRP FIBER OPTIC ECOSYSTEM – ENABLER TO ENHANCED CAPABILITIES U.S. NAVY PROGRAMS AND PRIORITIES Electric Ship Integrated Power and Energy Systems (IPES) Information Dominance Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR)

NSRP FIBER OPTIC ECOSYSTEM – ENABLER TO ENHANCED CAPABILITIES Electric Ship / IPES Critical Components: Medium Voltage (MV) and High Voltage (HV) Electrical Panels Insulated Bus Pipe (IBP) Health Monitoring Technology: Fiber Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing CHALLENGES: System’s optical loses at connection points Interconnect hardware at equipment Optical fiber integrity Cable routing

NSRP FIBER OPTIC ECOSYSTEM – ENABLER TO ENHANCED CAPABILITIES NSRP ENABLERS U.S. NAVY PROGRAM / PRIORITY CRITICAL COMPONENTS ENABLING TECHNOLOGY Shipboard Fiber Optic Cables Design Enhancements Fiber Optic Testing Enhancement for Cost Reduction Fusion Splice Enclosure at Equipment Alternatives to Fiber Optic Connectors MV and HV Electrical Panels Insulated Bus Pipe Electric Ship IPES Fiber Optic DTS

NSRP FIBER OPTIC ECOSYSTEM – ENABLER TO ENHANCED CAPABILITIES Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) Photonic systems to eliminate electrical interference with topside ISR equipment: Power Over Fiber (ONR N00014-19-C-2006) Remote Source Lighting with Diode Laser Light Sources Non-Electric Topside CHALLENGES: High optical power density Connectors’ end face preparation Optical fiber integrity Photonic energy transport system health monitoring Photonic to Electrical conversion (Energy conversion, heat management …)

NSRP FIBER OPTIC ECOSYSTEM – ENABLER TO ENHANCED CAPABILITIES NSRP Fiber Optic Technology Efforts Maintain a database of “Challenges” and “Solutions”. Apply “lessons learned” across multiple efforts. Match past efforts’ Solutions to new efforts’ Challenges. Consider and evaluate benefits to future potential applications: In similar functional systems (example: data communications); In different functional systems (example: photonic power transmission). The value of the NSRP fiber optic efforts goes well beyond the benefits to the targeted application.
