Causes of WWI

Snapshot- Page 2 (WWI & WWII) Learning Target: I can define the causes of WWI; I can make predictions and connections using my current knowledge Success Criteria: I know I hit the LT when I have written a definition for each of the 4 causes of WWI and when I have connected these concepts to war. Why: Understand causality

At the start of the 20th century, European nations had mostly been at peace for almost 100 years. As new nations formed within Europe and the control of territories overseas created competition, intense rivalries between countries were created The great powers of the world were pushed toward war by four distinct factors...

Simulation Rather than simply reading or talking about these, we will be participating in a class activity to experience each cause firsthand.

Debrief What were the effects of singing your group’s anthem? Describe the race for territory in the second competition. Why would a country want to spend time, money, and effort on its military? When the winner was announced, what took place? 7-8 5-6 3-4 1-2 All definitions complete Written in complete sentences Descriptions are accurate, specific, and detailed Accurate, Concise and Precise connections between simulation and actuality May be written in complete sentences Descriptions are mostly accurate with details Accurate, Concise or Precise connections between simulation and actuality Some or most definitions complete Descriptions are somewhat accurate or detailed Some accurate connections between simulation and actuality Few definitions complete Few accurate connections between simulation and actuality

MAIN Causes of War

Nationalism The intense belief in the superiority of one’s country over another and a desire to achieve cultural unity among all citizens.

Imperialism Domination of a powerful nation over the political, economic, and cultural affairs of another nation or region

Militarism The glorification of armed strength

Alliance A formal agreement between two countries for mutual benefit

Triple Entente The Allied Powers Britain, France,   Russia, Serbia

Triple Alliance The Central Powers   Germany, Italy, Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary,

The Major Players The Triple Entente (Allies) 1. France Gave up 2 rich provinces to Germany when they lost the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 Fought with Germany over a claim of Morocco 1905 Fears Germany, so forms an alliance with Russia The Triple Alliance (Central) 1.  Germany Kaiser Wilhelm II wants to have a large, rich colonial empire, with more raw materials. Forms an alliance with Austria-Hungary and Italy Builds up a large army and navy to compete with Britain, France and Russia.

The Major Players 2. Russia Borders Germany, has a large army. “Big Brother” to Serbia, believes “Slavic” countries should be united. Wants a port in the Balkans on the Mediterranean Sea 2. Austria-Hungary Slavic nationalism is threatening to break apart its empire; Slavic groups want to be independent. Took over Bosnia, wants to take over Serbia and control all Slavic people.

The Major Players 3. Britain Has the largest empire (colonial states) Has largest navy In “arms race” (competition) with Germany to build the largest navy. 3. Italy Has defensive alliance to help Germany and Austria-Hungary if they are attacked. Actions are offensive so Italy stays neutral, but later joins the Allies.

The Major Players 4. Ottoman Empire 4. Serbia Angry about Austria-Hungary take over of Bosnia (a Slavic country), because they wanted unification.
