Today’s lesson: How can tourism be managed sustainably? What is ecotourism? Why is it sustainable?

Sustainable Development is very similar to a stool! It needs equal legs or it will fall over or not work! Environment Futurity Equity and Justice Public Participation … But what does this mean?

Sustainability To be sustainable, there are 4 different things that must be done. Environment – we preserve the ecosystems Futurity – People think about future generations Equity – people are equal, everyone has their fair share Public participation – everyone working together

So how can we make tourism more sustainable?

Benidorm – How can we make this sustainable?

What management strategies for tourism do you know already? Leaflets to tourists advising them of acceptable behaviours in the place they’re visiting. Nature reserves – strict controls Provide litter bins Fenced off areas / clear walkways Cap the amount of development e.g. maximum number of hotels allowed in a certain settlement. Fines if rules not followed e.g. litter dropping Afforestation Zoning – designated areas for tourist use, areas that are protected.

Sustainable tourism Use resource 7 to define: Sustainable tourism Ecotourism Community tourism Colour the characteristics of mass vs ecotourism.
