Presentation transcript:

How is Dharavi represented in this painting? How reliable is the painting as a source of information? Dharavi Slum, Mumbai, India By C. Croidheain Ireland C. Croidhein (pronounced Kee-veen O Cree-awn) is an Irish artist who has exhibited widely around Ireland. His work consists of drawings and paintings and features local scenes as well as images from his travels to the west of Ireland and abroad.  Caoimhghin's social and political themes range from the local to the global.

Social inequality within Dharavi Using the graphs and any other relevant information… Describe the extent of social inequality within Dharavi. e.g. the are millionaires living in a slum where 40% of people earn less than $10 per month and there is only 1 toilet per 1,450 people

Inequality within Mumbai – Dharavi is in Ward G/N Use the information on the sheets to annotate the map to compare Dharavi with the rest of Mumbai

Social inequality facts 16.4 million people live on 6% of Mumbai’s land (high density 1million / mile) 54.5% have come to live in the slum areas in Mumbai. Link to HDI data: http://theopendata.com/site/2012/01/mumbai-human-development-report-2009/ 2 types of population are living within the slums –urban poor and urban non poor. A large amount of disparity occurs with respect to the socioeconomic status of the population living in the slums. According to the World Bank report, 2001, the poor have much higher levels of Mortality, malnutrition and fertility than the rich; the poor-rich risk ratio is 2.5 for infant mortality, 2.8 for under- five mortality, 1.7 for childhood underweight and 2 for total fertility rate The high concentration of slum population is considered as a representation for urban poor and also can be treated as a high concentration of deprived group in a society lacking basic needs of livelihood. As % of slum population decreases, the level of HDI increases. The Lower the level of HDI, the higher the infant death rate is mainly due to the issue of affordability to seek treatment from private hospitals. Research suggests that dispensaries are more likely to be located in the area of City Island. For poor people living in the slums, availability and affordability are the two most important factors for utilizing health care services as compared to any other factors as far as child’s health is concerned.
