Fisheries Management..? “The integrated process of information gathering, analysis, planning, consultation, decision-making, allocation of resources and formulation and implementation, with enforcement as necessary, of regulations or rules which govern fisheries activities in order to ensure the continued productivity of the resources and the accomplishment of other fisheries objectives.” FAO definition…

Tuna Fisheries Management From this workshop, you might think data is collected to fulfil WCPFC obligations, but .. SPC/FFA members decided to collect data a few decades ago So, Regional standards were developed … To monitor and assess shared highly migratory fish stocks, & fleet activities

What is your data use for? Stock assessment – health of stocks/fishery Management Frameworks/Designs - policy formulations, allocations, HCRs, TRPs. Compliance –regulatory frameworks, MCS & management measures/rules, Development – social and economic benefits Government – national consideration/political will Trade and Markets– exports, Public – social impacts, Need to know

Data is correct – validate and verify.. Role of Data officers… Data is correct – validate and verify.. Timely produced and available – underpins planning and formulation processes. Tools and systems fit for purpose and affordable. Secure and defend budgets…
