Diadromous Fish & Dam Restoration Importances By: Kassie Furtado, Sabrina Costa, Valeria Maldonado

What is a Diadromous Fish? Organism that migrates between salt and freshwater Spread nutrients between both types of water Examples Blueback Herring River Herring Alewife Atlantic Salmon Rainbow Smelt American Shad Atlantic Sturgeon American Eel Sea Lamprey

American Eel LOOKS Body of a snake Dorsal fin far behind pectoral fins Pelvic fins nonexistent Scales, but can’t be seen by the naked eye No set color Transparent brown/grey-green yellow/olive- brown Brown to silver LIFE CYCLE Born in Sargasso Sea Once glass eels, move into rivers Turn yellow Silver once fully grown Migrate back to Sargasso Sea to lay eggs Die THREATS Dams Less habitat Cannot migrate Hydroelectric Turbines Get caught and die

Dam Restoration (Field Study) During the field trip to Acushnet River, we witnessed many organisms in their natural habitats. We learned about the different stages of american eels, and even got to see glass and yellow eels, the early stages of the American Eel. Along with learning about the american eels, we learned about the history of the park and the river. The river was used as a sawmill for 150 years. In the year 2007, the family that lived there decided to sell the property for permanent conservation. In the years of 2007-8, the Coalition(co-a-li-shion)organization,(the new owners) built the fish ladder that is now used today. To help the marine animals in the river to reach their spawning destination.

How can we help the fish? eel & blueback herring ladders Help with migration Eel ladder designed to help get past barriers such as dams & natural barriers. The eel ladder is pipes on wall, & eels coil around them to go up. Fish ladder helps fish get from one place to another. Steps that fish jump up or down so they can go where they need to be without dam being in way.
