“The Red Fox Fur Coat” by Gersao Unit 1 Lesson 2.2 “The Red Fox Fur Coat” by Gersao

Agenda Bell Work/Discussion “The Red Fox Fur Coat” reading and discussion First-person narrative Analysis Author’s craft

Close Reading and Observation As I read, mark the text. The main character begins her story as a “humble bank clerk.” What does she end the story as?

Writing to Explore On a separate sheet of paper, write a short first-person narrative, written from the perspective of the bank clerk, reporting her physical evolution throughout the course of the story-almost as if she is reporting physical symptoms to a doctor.

Analyzing the Story With your shoulder partner, share your first-person narrative. Compare the details you each used to explain what happened to you. What details did your partner use that you didn’t? Add more details/quotations (in a list is okay) after your story.

Appreciating the Author’s Craft Word Choice: Why does Gersao use the word reincarnating instead of transforming in the last paragraph? How did the author plant seed from the very beginning of the story to indicate that the woman was destined to return to her “foxy” self?

Work with your partner to capture each other’s response in a complex sentence. Craft two sentences, for each of your responses. Begin your sentence with a subordinating conjunction that indicates contrast, such as “Although.”

Although the bank clerk of Gersao’s “The Red Fox Fur Coat” begins the story as a humble human, she transforms into a fox because_______________________

Although the bank clerk of Gersao’s “The Red Fox Fur Coat” begins the story as a humble human, she transforms into a fox because she is returning to her true primal self.
