Aim: Why do we need to study waves?

The Beach

True or False TRUE or FALSE: In order for John to hear Jill, air molecules must move from the lips of Jill to the ears of John. FALSE How is a wave different than a particle? Waves transfer energy only. Particles transfer energy and mass.

How sound travels?

What is a wave? A wave is a disturbance that moves through a medium. A medium is a material that a wave travels through. A pulse is a single disturbance. A periodic wave is a series of continuous disturbances.

List 3 examples of waves Are there any types of waves that do not require a medium to propagate through? LIGHT (Electromagnetic Waves)

Why is it important to be quiet in avalanche country? In the movie on Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the bad guys try to stop James Bond, who is escaping on skis, by firing a gun and causing an avalanche. Why did this happen ? The wave disturbs the mountain causing it to vibrate.

Waves vs. Particles Waves transfer energy only. Particles transfer energy and mass.

Thought Questions Mac and Tosh are experimenting with pulses on a rope. They vibrate an end up and down to create the pulse and observe it moving from end to end. How does the position of a point on the rope, before the pulse comes, compare to the position after the pulse has passed? SAME Minute after minute, hour after hour, day after day, ocean waves continue to splash onto the shore. Explain why the beach is not completely submerged and why the middle of the ocean has not yet been depleted of its water supply. The wave moves through the ocean; not the water. 3.A medium is able to transport a wave from one location to another because the particles of the medium are ____. a. frictionless b. isolated from one another c. able to interact d. very light

Transverse Wave A wave in which the disturbance or vibration is perpendicular to the direction of wave motion. Example: Light

Longitudinal Wave A wave in which the disturbance is parallel to the direction of wave motion. Example: Sound

Surface Wave- (transverse-longitudinal combination)

Thought Question A long line of people is waiting to buy tickets at a movie theater. When the first person leaves, a pulse of motion occurs as people step forward to fill in the gap. As each person steps forward, the gap moves through the line. Is the propagation of this gap transverse or longitudinal? LONGITUDINAL Consider “the wave” at a soccer or football game: People stand up and shout as the wave arrives at their location, and this pulse moves around the stadium. Is this wave transverse or longitudinal? TRANSVERSE
