Fig 1 Results of a 2-way sensitivity analysis varying the rate of complications with tunneled pleural catheter and risk of recurrence with bedside pleurodesis. It identifies which strategy is optimal in regions of values of the variables; thresholds are simply the border between two regions. As an example, if the rate of complications with TPC is 16%, BP would be the preferred option if rate of recurrence of effusion with BP is less than 33%. (TPC_compl = rate of complication with tunneled pleural catheter [expressed as a fraction]; BP_recurrent = rate of recurrence with bedside pleurodesis [expressed as a fraction]; wtp 50000 = willingness to pay set at $50,000/additional QALY gained.)
