Cross Cutting Concepts

Systems and System models Systems help us explain complex ideas They have multiple parts, inputs/outputs, perform a function ex. Rock cycle, Earth, Body system

Energy and Matter Inputs and outputs of systems Matter is any physical object solids, liquids, gas Energy is anything that affects matter temperature and electricity

Structure and Function The object’s shape gives you a clue about how it will work ex. Bicycle and straw

Stability and Change Describes how a system works How the system is changing over time How the system responds to changes ex. Climate

Patterns Similarities and differences Help us understand data and graphs ex. Moon cycle

Cause and Effect Explaining how two things interact Can be used to help predict ex. melting rocks causes them to become magma

Scale/Proportion/Quantity Using the correct size and time to look at science idea Ex. Looking only at minerals Looking at the earth as a whole
