Unit 1 Lesson 3.1

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge I choose to have students break them into 5 categories because otherwise I find they always tend to unintentionally make categories that are nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs. Ambrose Bierce

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge Get into your 4 person groups. Cut the words into individual squares. Sort all your words into 5 groups. You need to come up with the label for each group. You may use a dictionary to help define unfamiliar words. Discuss how you are separating them as you work. I choose to have students break them into 5 categories because otherwise I find they always tend to unintentionally make categories that are nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge Discuss as a group how these words should be grouped together. Come up with 5 different categories Create rows for each category. There is no wrong or right way to do this! Once you have determined how you want to categorize the words, use the sticky notes to label each category. I choose to have students break them into 5 categories because otherwise I find they always tend to unintentionally make categories that are nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge Walk around the room and observe how each group categorized and labeled the sets of words. As you walk around think about what commonalities or patterns you see. What differences? (Be prepared to answer these questions when I call on you.) I choose to have students break them into 5 categories because otherwise I find they always tend to unintentionally make categories that are nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge When finished, discuss what you think the story will be about based on these words. On page 33 complete and write: “I predict that “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” will be about … because....” I choose to have students break them into 5 categories because otherwise I find they always tend to unintentionally make categories that are nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge The name of the story these words come from, which we will begin tomorrow, is “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” Based on everything we discussed today, fill out the following sentence frame on the strips of paper on your desks: We predict that “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” will be about _______ because ________. Put your group’s names on the back Bring your strip of paper to me in the back. I choose to have students break them into 5 categories because otherwise I find they always tend to unintentionally make categories that are nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs.
