What science we’ve learned so far: Scientists make observations. Observation = data gathered using one’s senses or tools that enhance the senses. Quantitative: involving numbers Qualitative: involving features or characteristics (like size, shape, color, texture, what it’s made of, condition, etc.)

Science we’ve learned so far Scientists ask a lot of questions. Levels of Questioning: Level one: basic facts Level two: more complex, research needed Level three: questions that challenge findings and demand evidence, questions that address larger themes like ethics

Example: L1: What is cloning? L2: What scientific knowledge is required to clone an organism? L3: How should we decide whether or when to clone?

Our own science questions Ecology and environment How does global warming cause a heat wave? Why is there so much grass? What causes acid rain? What causes global warming? How can we make recycling more fun? How can people stop global warming? Why does snow fall?

Cells Why do skin cells regenerate? How does such a tiny thing as a cell hold so much information? How can cells hurt us? Why are there so many different kinds of cells? What’s the difference between plant cells and animal cells?

Genetics/DNA Whose DNA is stronger, mom or dad? If neither parent has a particular characteristic, how does the child end up with that characteristic? How are diseases inherited? How do twins form? How did so many races come to be? Can DNA tell if you are related to someone?

Evolution Are humans descended from apes? Do people believe in evolution more than the Bible? Will humans ever go extinct? Where do organisms come from? What will come after humans in evolution?
