Experiment 15 Activity Series CHE116

Purpose of This Experiment Gain more experience with chemical reactions Gain experience with the relative reactivity of metals Work in groups of 2 CHE116

Remember…. Use only ¼ inch size pieces of Mg metal and Cu metal The following will not be used in exp. 15: Ca metal and Fe2+ solution CHE116

Part A The relative activity of each metal is based on the metal’s reaction with HCl(aq) Some reactions are very slow For calcium: Reaction with HCl = Yes Observation: Ca dissolves and H2 gas forms Equations: Molecular and net ionic formats CHE116

Part B The relative activity of each metal is based on the metal’s reaction with a solution of a metal ion (other than itself) There is no Calcium metal: observations for Ca(s) row of table are Yes, reaction occurs with each metal ion solution There is no Fe2+ solution: observations for the Fe2+ column are Ca = yes, Cu = NR, Fe = NR, Mg = Yes, slowly, Sn = NR, Zn = almost No CHE116

Clean-up Please dispose of all solutions in the appropriate waste container. CHE116
