16 04: DIARY 20 GCSEart&designexamination Artists, craftspeople and designers have sometimes created work that records events over a period of time. ‘Les Tres Riches Heures’ is a book of hours which includes colourful seasonal images of medieval life. Becky Adams makes embroidered books documenting important events in her life, and craftsperson Tracie Murchison makes wooden vessels decorated with images and text recording memories of people and places. Juliana Coles is inspired by personal recollections when making her collaged sketchbooks and paintings. Angela Moll makes diary quilts and Nearly Normal Design create handcrafted calendar journals. Investigate appropriate sources and use suitable techniques to create your own work based on Diary.

GCSEart&design2015/16 Les Tres Riches Heures painter Key Stage 4 The Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry is the most famous and possibly the best surviving example of French Gothic manuscript illumination, showing the late International Gothic phase of the style. painter KEY WORDS – COLOUR, NARRATIVE, COMPOSITION PEOPLE, LIFE Les Tres Riches Heures

GCSEart&design2015/16 BECKY ADAMS painter Key Stage 4 Becky Adams is an applied artist based in Penarth, South Wales. She combines stitched paper, vintage fabric, old sketchbooks and antique ephemera to create intricate textile and book works. BECKY ADAMS http://www.beckyadams.co.uk/

GCSEart&design2015/16 TRACIE MURCHISON painter Key Stage 4 “My work is constructed by layering wood with mixed media, combining unexpected materials to create unique artwork. My process results in colours and textures that contrast with the smooth hard edges of the wood. A sense of ‘erosion’ is achieved with the simultaneous revealing and concealing of layers in the final stages of making. My choice of forms, images and text evoke memories of people and places.” painter TRACIE MURCHISON

GCSEart&design2015/16 JULIANA COLES painter Key Stage 4 “I have a unique definition for the process I have developed and teach,  and use the term Extreme Visual Journals as the container for that process. What makes these books Extreme Visual Journals is the act of combining journal writing assignments…and various mixed media techniques to create a unique book of self expression. In an Extreme Visual Journal, we are after the rich interior.  We are concerned with our own and unique inner, ancient wisdom.  We want to find our voice, our style, and our flair for life by documenting our past, present and future in a book.  We are NOT concerned with making art.  We are NOT concerned with a product or pretty picture.  We want to know how to unfold and in that moment, there is remarkable beauty on the page we did not know we possessed.” JULIANA COLES

GCSEart&design2015/16 ANGELA MOLL painter Key Stage 4 Angela Moll's artwork ranges from wearable art to quilts, all using her screen printed and painted fabric as a point of departure. “In the Secret Diary series I look inside, into the intimate space where journals are written, where quilts are stitched. The pages of my Secret Diaries are actual journal entries screen printed on fabric. Each quilt is an open notebook, the oversized text extending an invitation to read. Yet the stitched diaries prove to be unreadable, revealing just the outline of a life story: rhythm and pattern, lines and layers. The pressure, intensity, and speed of the hand written line imply the texture of emotions. It is an open book but a Secret Diary.” ANGELA MOLL http://www.angelamoll.com/
