Our focus today Barriers to progress – PSED/CL Making expected progress Making above expected progress General information
Barriers to Learning Children’s capacity to learn can be affected by: Emotional issues Self-esteem/confidence Home circumstances Specific learning issues
How can we address these barriers? Daily mile track Jigsaw, calm times and worry monsters Learning mentor Stories
How can we develop their learning? Extending or open ended questioning – why/explain/What do you know about…? Asking them to build upon their answers Don’t accept shrugging or “I just know”! – expect a response Talk about their experiences Encourage them to express a view or an opinion or explain something – play dumb!
How can we develop their learning? Keep practicing word cards and tricky words on phoneme mat Big Cat books – share regularly and write in their reading diary. Repetition is key – read a little a lot! Encourage your child to show understanding. Ask them: To predict what might happen next, To express an opinion on their favourite character and why, To recall and explain the main events of the story Developing other ways of reading, beyond picture cues, repetition and use of phonics – ‘chunking’ or syllables
How can we develop their learning? Practice spelling tricky words – use the phoneme mat Expect sounding out attempts using tools they know – phoneme mat, song. If they can read their word cards – practice spelling them. Rehearse orally the sentence before writing it. Building up writing stamina
