LEARNING AND TEACHING YOUR PRESENTER ELVEY HAMILTON

OBJECTIVES OF THE SABBATH SCHOOL SPIRITUAL NURTURING FELLOWSHIP COMMUNITY OUTREACH WORLD MISSION OUTREACH

WHAT IS LEARNING? Learning is like breathing, you can’t live without it. Learning is like salt and vinegar chips because some of them are burnt, stale and bad, and some of them are really good. Learning is like putting on a light after being in the dark. Learning is a relatively permanent change in behaviour that occurs through experience.

WHAT IS TEACHING? Learning experiences that are facilitated by a human being. Teaching is the giving of oneself, time, energy and effort to prepare others for the future.

WHAT IS TEACHING (CON’TD) Teaching is lecturing. Teaching is transmitting knowledge to students. Teaching is facilitating learning (i.e. causing someone to learn something).

THE EXCELLENT TEACHER One who helps the learner to acquire: The required knowledge The ability to discover knowledge The ability to critically evaluate knowledge The ability to apply the knowledge THE ABILITY TO LEARN AND THINK INDEPENDENTLY AND TO USE WHAT IS LEARNT CONSTRUCTIVELY

PURPOSE OF LESSON DISCUSSION Encourage daily lesson study Participation for learning Application to life Preparation for witnessing

DISCUSSION & APPLICATION Be a choir director and not a soloist. Try to get everyone to participate. Ask questions that will lead to life application. Do not pour truth into the brain like a funnel.

REMEMBER!!! Aim to uncover the lesson not to cover it. People remember 10% of what they hear but 90% of what they see, hear and talk about. Learn to listen to your students. The lesson must be person- oriented not subject- oriented. Study to analyze not to recite facts.
