Aim: How did the world change between 1450 – 1750? Do Now:

Causes of the Age of Exploration A) The Ottoman Empire gained control of the Silk Roads in the 15th century  desire to find new routes to South and East Asia for spices and silk. B) New technologies: Caravan ships could sail against the wind Portolan Maps showed compass points Astrolabe: The stars can show your latitude

Imperialism and Mercantilism Imperialism: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Colony: An area under the political control of another country, typically a distant one, and occupied by settlers from that country. Mercantilism: An economic system where an imperialistic mother country exploits the resources of its colonies for profit.

Mercantilism: A Political Cartoon 1. Describe what you literally see in the cartoon. 2. What is the historical context behind the cartoon? (What political issue it is referring to?) 3. What symbols do you see? What might they mean? 4. What is the bias or perspective of the artist? How do you know?

The Age of Exploration Portolan maps and Caravel Ships were used by the Portuguese and Spanish explorers in the 15th and 16th centuries. Portolan maps had lines radiating out from compass points.

The Columbian Exchange was the cultural diffusion of new crops, domesticated animals, peoples, and diseases between the “Old” and “New” worlds.

Middle Passage

The Encomienda System The encomienda system in Spanish (Latin) America was similar to feudalism. Spanish nobles forced Natives to do labor. After Bartholome de las Casas wrote a letter of complaint to the King of Spain, the New Laws of the Indies were created, banning the system  increase in African slaves.
