Monday May 13th – Thursday May 16th 2019 Key Stage 2 SATs Monday May 13th – Thursday May 16th 2019 The Key Stage 2 tests are national tests. They are taken by all children in State schools in year 6 who are deemed to be working at level 3 or above.

All children in Year 6 sit them during the same week. Key stage 2 Assessments National Curriculum tests (SATs) are carried out at the end of Year 2 and 6. All children in Year 6 sit them during the same week. The tests are externally marked by trained markers Tests provide a standard ‘snapshot’ of attainment on what they can do on one day in May. Used in conjunction with teacher assessment. The 3 core subjects. It is an indicator of how children are doing, but, like a driving test some children surpass themselves, others may not perform as well as expected.

When are they happening?

The Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test (SPAG) Marks will be deducted if sentences are not punctuated with full stops and capitals or if the capital letter does not look like a capital letter! Furthermore, if capital letters are wrongly included, they will also not receive a mark for that answer. Upper and lower case letters must be clear. Spelling of words even when not being specifically tested is also important as is the size of punctuation!

Grammar includes: Word classes (nouns, verbs, adjectives etc) Features of different types of sentences (statements, exclamations, questions and commands) Grammar of complex sentences (clauses, phrases, subordinating and coordinating conjunctions, noun phrases) Verb tenses (Past/present progressive, present perfect) Standard and non standard English use (contractions, active and passive voice, subjunctive form)

Grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 2 The spelling task, consists of 20 sentences, which are read aloud by the test administrator. Each sentence has a word missing which the child must complete. Total 20 marks.

How to support your child with Grammar, spelling and punctuation Help your child learn the spellings in the spelling passport booklets. Check which words they can read and use in a sentence. Reading 1 reading paper 1 hour to read 3 passages of text and to answer questions about the texts. Increases in difficulty as each section progresses 50 marks

What types of questions will they be asked? Retrieval – who, what, when, where type questions. Where did Anousheh start her trip? How long did she stay? Inference – why, how, use of language - How can you tell the International space station is very large? Find and copy – Find and copy a group of words that show Anousheh wrote her blog for others. Authorial choice – …in a flash… What does this tell you about the burning rocks in space? Opinion and reasoning – Based on what you had read, what does the last paragraph suggest might happen to the explorers next?

How to support your child with Reading Read with your child: get your child to re aloud to you, and then ask them questions such as the examples given above. Read aloud to your child whilst your child follows the text: listening is an important part of reading; it will help your child learn the importance of punctuation and reading with expression. How do we support your children in the lead up to the tests? Look at sample and previous SATs papers to: Familiarise children with format and language of tests Discuss strategies for answering questions Gain experience of working under test constraints Use additional staff members (Mrs Gould) to create 4 smaller groups for Maths and English . Intervention groups at assembly and in the afternoon.
