Feedback from break-out session on Underwater Noise (D11) and Marine Litter (D10) Mediator: ICES -Neil Holdsworth Rapporteur: EC-DGENV- C2 Lydia Martin-Roumegas

Pre-requisites Consider the recent revision of Good Environmental Status including D10 litter categories, D11 C1 (Criteria for Impulsive Noise) and D11 C2 (Criteria for ambient/continuous noise) Consider RSC indicators, and existing national/regional monitoring (and its limitations)

Underwater Noise (D11) impulsive and ambient sound D11-C1 Anthropogenic impulsive sound in water : Impulsive noise register developed in 3 marine regions Well developed in OSPAR, HELCOM via ICES and in Mediterranean sea via ACCOBAMS Data exchange format developed and applicable across Marine regions, likewise controlled lists Good connection between Regional, National and European (TG NOISE) work/actors OGC WMS/WFS being used to share data product/indicator

Underwater Noise (D11) impulsive and ambient sound D11-C2 Anthropogneic continuous low-frequency sound in water EU BIAS project, good progress in Baltic and used in HOLAS II (HELCOM) BIAS developed standards on ‘raw’ acoustic data instrumentation and transmission Need further discussion at the next TG noise on methodology and agreement In parallel, 3 ISO standards are developed on underwaternoise: One on vocabularies is finalised 2 on measurement and modelling are in progress In addition, an InterReg project proposed in the North Sea, if approved, will further the work of BIAS on standards

Marine litter (D10) TG marine litter well progressed in exchanging with RSC’s and now with EMODnet Chemistry (OSPAR , Med,…) Marine litter categories: ok at the top level, but difficult to match/compare when at the granular level across beach/sea surface/seafloor and regions TG DATA and INSPIRE experts are well placed to assist TG litter in developing understanding in heterogenous marine litter categorisation, specifically: Flat mapping between controlled lists has been done by TG marine litter but it is not enough A Semantic mapping and ontology would be beneficial to aid the national and regional level Application of INSPIRE specification for beach survey data (transect/grids/polygons???) which specification could be used? And to which Marine unit it belongs – need easy system to be used by NGO and volunteers/public access Discussion on times series and hotspot / linked to monitoring station definition/attributes
