Welcome to: The First 30 Days - SRO and School Administrators

The First 30 Days of the School Year 1. Review the agency/school district agreement. - sample contract on NASRO’s website - what are the hours, job duties, etc? - officer procedural issues - Overtime, flex schedule, off duty, etc.

The First 30 Days of the School Year Meeting with the building administration: 1. Expectations 2. Review contract, discuss details 3. Communication lines 4. School/law overlap 5. Assisting with students

Strategies for immersing yourself into the school community Attend the enrollment or fee payment sessions. Introduce yourself and participate in new student orientation programs. Attend the back to school teacher in-service days, participate when possible. Attend and participate in beginning of the year assemblies and programs.

Strategies for immersing yourself into the school community Meet weekly with the building administration. Attend monthly faculty meetings and present whenever possible. Help plan, critique, and implement the building crisis plan. Update the faculty, via email, about safety issues in the building and community.

Strategies for immersing yourself into the school community Attend dances, football games, and other major school functions. Visit all first year student classrooms (9th or 10th grade in HS or 6th or 7th grade in MS or JRHS). Write articles for the school newsletter to communicate with the entire community. Attend back to school night.

Strategies for immersing yourself into the school community Attend a PTA/PTO meeting Offer class time/presentations to the faculty Ask an administrator to watch one of your classroom presentations. Put your stamp on one program and do it well (anti-drug, safe driving, alcohol awareness, anti-bullying, etc.)

Strategies for immersing yourself into the school community. Be the most visible person in your building (lunchroom, hallways, parking lot, stairwells, classrooms, commons, etc.) Meet regularly with other SRO’s. Continue to grow professionally through seminars, conferences, conventions, professional reading, and research.
