Welcome Mrs. Shew’s Classroom 2019-2020

Meet the Teacher My name is Mrs. Shew. I am very excited to be your child’s 2nd Grade teacher this year. Previously, I taught 3rd grade for 4 years and before that I taught 1st grade for 6 years. I am married with three daughters. My favorite color is aqua. My favorite book is “Charlotte’s Web.” My favorite candy is Reese Cups. My favorite food is pizza. My hobbies include baking and camping.

Morning Arrival Students will report directly to the gym after breakfast or until going to class. Enter the classroom quietly, unpack your bookbag, place bag in the closet Go to your desk immediately Everyday look at the whiteboard for directions of what assignment you need to work on

Math Represent and solve problems Demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction Work with equal groups Understand place value Count within 1,000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s Read and write numbers, within 1,000, using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form Compare two three-digit numbers Add and subtract, within 1,000 Measure and estimate lengths Build understanding of time and money Represent and interpret data Reason with shapes and their attributes

Reading Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. fables and folktales from diverse cultures Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges Structure of a story –Beginning, Middle, End Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story Main Idea , Purpose of the text

Spelling Tests on Friday Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one syllable words. Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams. Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels. Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes. Identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences. Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.

Science Understand how forces (pushes or pulls) affect the motion of an object Summarize the needs of living organisms for energy and growth Recognize the features and patterns of the earth/moon/sun system as observed from Earth. Understand the physical properties of Earth materials that make them useful in different ways Understand characteristics of various environments and behaviors of humans that enable plants and animals to survive.

Social Studies Understand how various sources provide information about the past. Understand how various cultures influence communities Use geographic representations, terms and technology to process information from a spatial perspective. Understand the effects of humans interacting with their environment. Understand basic economic concepts Understand the purpose of governments Understand the roles and responsibilities of citizens.

Handwriting We will be writing in D’Nelian up until after December then we will begin learning how to write in CURSIVE!

Lunch Our lunch will be at 11:25. Please feel free to come eat with child. However, please note that you may only eat with your child. Sign in at the office and wait on us in the Commons Area.

Recess We will go the playground each day, WEATHER permitting. Please remember to wear comfortable and safe shoes.

Communication Please make sure you check your child’s planner every night.  It will need to be initialed each night.  This will be our main line of communication each day.  Many times there may not be any notes in there. Please, still initial it to show you have checked for notes.  Feel free to write me any notes there, too. I check planners every morning. The cost of planners is $6.00.  

B.E.E Binder What is in the binder? Daily Schedule  Your child’s  BEE (Bring Everything Everyday) binder needs to be at school every day.   Your child will take it back and forth between home and school.  This binder is probably the most important thing they keep up with all year long. What is in the binder? Daily Schedule Questions to ask your child before, during, and after reading. Weekly Spelling List Place to put any money needing to be turned in. Place to put homework in. Notes And MORE!

Field Trips We will take field trips to the Broyhill Civic Center. Other trips, I will let you know more about as our second-grade team Plans.

Birthdays If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, please let Mrs. Shew know a week in advance.  You may bring cupcakes or cookies for the celebrations. We will eat them at lunchtime in the cafeteria. Please do not send birthday party invitations to school unless every child in the classroom will receive one.
