Genotype–Phenotype Relationships in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: p53 Inactivation Promotes Tumors With Stem Cell Features  Jean–Charles Nault, Jessica Zucman–Rossi  Gastroenterology  Volume 142, Issue 5, Pages 1066-1069 (May 2012) DOI: 10.1053/j.gastro.2012.03.010 Copyright © 2012 AGA Institute Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 p53 inactivation at initiation step in liver carcinogenesis. Mice with liver-specific p53 disruption developed HCC harboring chromosomal instability and bilineal features. Both mature hepatocytes and liver stem cells purified from p53−/− livers are able to give rise to HCC tumors with stem cell-like markers. Additional inactivation of the retinoblastoma (Rb) pathway participates in tumor development and increases its agressivity.
