Presentation transcript:

1st Q, wk #2 August 19-23, 2019

Bellringer, Monday, Aug. 19 After picking up your folders: Pick up a syllabus and syllabus return sheet. Look over the syllabus I handed to you You will be taking this home and bring back the signature form (last page) this week; it is worth 10 formative points

3rd period: Use this time to choose which group you would like to work with. Each group must have at least 3 members; no more than 5 people in a group. If you did not present last week, please just turn in your papers to the 3rd period class tray by my desk.

Syllabus Scavenger Hunt Together, search the syllabus to find the answers to these questions Follow the group norms while working First group to find all correct answers wins a prize All groups receive formative grade

Prizes Scavenger Hunt prize winners, receive your prize

A complete sentence is made up of _________________ Bellringer, Tuesday 8/20 (Please remember to sit at a desk with your group’s number for attendance purposes) Pick up a Bellringer form from the red tray by the door On Tuesday’s lines, write your response to fill in the blank to this statement: A complete sentence is made up of _________________ Place your signed syllabus sheet in the appropriate class tray; if you do not have it today, bring it tomorrow

Pass Forms Put your name on the yellow Pass Form and place it inside your folder This paper is the way you receive a pass to leave the class; I do not like to take out class time to fill out passes, so you need to complete it and bring it to me for my signature. Sign out on the white board (your name and time) and take the pass with you. When you return, put the pass form back in the folder for the next time you need one. If you need another one, I will have to notify a parent or guardian.

Complete and turn in Diagnostic Receive a Grammar Diagnostic Test; first put your name at the top begin working on the answers individually at your desk You may have your phones in your pocket or backpack (or charger station); you can listen to music with one earbud, but keep the phone out of your hand and lap and off of the desk When you are finished, put it in your class’s tray After we have explored the correct answers, you will take a summative grammar test this quarter

Bellringer, Wednesday, 8/21 On your Bellringer form for Wednesday, answer this question: What part of the diagnostic grammar test did I struggle with the most? Pick a copy of each of the two handouts on the back table. If you were absent yesterday, come get a pass form from me.

Understanding Grades—Stamp Grades I give stamp grades for engaging in the learning process, activities in which you gather information or supply an opinion or educated guess (such as bellringers) These stamps are worth points toward one formative grade on participation each quarter. They can only be earned when present in class; there is no makeup work for stamp grades. You can miss up to 5 stamp grades before it starts affecting your grade (i.e., five absences have been considered “made up”) It is important that you keep all your stamped papers in your English folder until I collect them for a grade

Let’s look at some grammar powerpoints to see the rules

Bellringer, Thursday, 8/22 Rewrite the following sentence so that it is grammatically correct: The man crossed the street wearing the straw hat and waved at the little girls smiling. If you were absent yesterday, pick up the handouts on the back table and get your diagnostic test back from me.

Possible answers: The man wearing the straw hat crossed the street wearing the straw hat and waved at the smiling little girls smiling. Smiling, the man wearing the straw hat crossed the street wearing the straw hat and waved at the little girls smiling. The man wearing the straw hat crossed the street, wearing the straw hat smiled, and waved at the little girls smiling.

Turn in bellringers We will not be meeting in the classroom tomorrow, so there will be no bellringer for Friday. Instead, tomorrow go straight to the Learning Commons for class.

Group work: Correcting the Grammar Diagnostic As a group, compare your diagnostic tests and as a group figure out the correct answers for each section using the copies of the powerpoints to help you Your group will receive a formative grade for this work AT THE END OF THE PERIOD TURN IN WHAT YOUR GROUP HAS DONE.

Friday, 8/23 Common Lit exercise: Regular classes: “Salem Witch Hunt” Honor class: “Puritans and their Laws”
