SUSTAINABILITY & FUTURE GOALS NW-PULSE @ NW Bio 2018 POSTER TITLE WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY Lisa Carloye, Gretchen Rollwagen-Bollens, David Evans VISION – Build a Baseline for Vertical Curriculum Planning MAIN GOAL– We created a curriculum map showing Pre-requisite Upper level courses pathways. We created a survey using the BioCore Guide to gather data from faculty on the depth and context of Core Content, Core Competencies and Core Skills in each Biology/Zoology majors course. Photos should be at least 300dpi, but not more than 5-12 mgs each. Your poster is set to be enlarged 200% so do not change the page size to fit another poster size. Posters (3’ x 4’) will be printed at WWU using the same purchase order at the same time. Please email your poster as a PPT file to by Joann Otto at WWU by Friday, April 13, 2018, by 5 pm. Please contact Joann Otto (Joann.Otto@wwu.edu) with questions about poster printing. Also please put your institution “logo” on your poster. Please note that this template is provided to simplify your effort to prepare a poster for the NW Biology meeting. You can change the font size, colors, column widths, add photos, institutional logos, graphics, etc. This template can also be used as a starting point and you can be as creative as you want in your poster. However, we would like to have all of the posters the same size and we will be printed at the same time, at the same print shop in order to easily pay for printing with one purchase order. ACTIONS Products What our team accomplished: Created a pre-requisite-to-electives flow chart capturing the integration of our core curriculum within our course offerings. We are seeking to understand the big picture and are gathering data in order to consider the question of how to better align with V&C and resisting the urge to start changing now. This tool forced will provide a framework to approach faculty should change be indicated. We drew heavily on the BioCore Guide to format and create our survey. We added our own category to include Core Skills. Products: Qualtrix-based survey to gain information about our curriculum and how it maps to the V&C ideals (Fig 1). Pre-requisite flow chart mapping how our core courses feed into our curriculum (Fig 2). Figure 1: Survey of vertical integration of core concepts, core values and core skills in curriculum. STRENGTHS & LEVERAGE SUSTAINABILITY & FUTURE GOALS Administration who cares about student success and using evidence-based teaching. WSU “Student success Grand Challenge” initiative. The data from the survey will be used to create a V&C curriculum map. This picture will be shared and discussed with the department and we will plan how to address deficiencies and implement changes. NW-PULSE, NW-BIO will help us assess our efforts with the assessment tools already developed. BARRIERS & CHALLENGES We have many degree options and the courses required for each vary making it difficult to see curricular pathways clearly. “Buy-in” from faculty who may be resistant to changes in their/our courses.
